Day #5-AT at Home

EDUC 5173 - Assistive Technology
Day 5-Journal Entry-At home Thoughts about Assistive Technology
July 12, 2016

All of this discussion about AT has really got me thinking about the everyday items I am using at home to make my chores and daily living easier. Anyone who has met me knows that I am 5’2’ and by most people's standards it leaves me quite short when it comes to maneuvering around my home.

As I logged my daily activities today, cooking, showering, putting away laundry-to name a few-I realized that although I am only 37 my height has caused me to require several items to go through my routine. When I designed my home a few years ago, I tried to ensure my home was short user friendly but in the end I still found myself requiring several tools to make my daily routine run smoothly. Here are just a few of the tools that I have come to use.

Kitchen Activities-My kitchen routine includes countless tools to help with cooking and putting away the dishes. From foot stools to kitchen gadgets-you name it I got it….Oh do I wish I had been wearing my dollar store lens to be able to save me tons of money.

Bathroom Cleaning-I keep a Rubbermaid stool in the shower to ensure that I can reach when cleaning it as well as shaving my legs on a regular basis. Is also use a shower cleaning extension.

Laundry Activities-I am too short to reach all the shelves in the laundry room and I am constantly using a ladder in there as well as putting clothing away in my closet.

I am really curious if I am the only one that relies on this low tech assistive technology to achieve my daily routine and chores. Please let me know if you have any ideas that can help someone shorter in stature complete daily chores.

  1. Hey Alecia!

I love that you are thinking about the low tech assistive tech that you use everyday. It is always good to remember that everyone can benefit from adaptive and appropriate tools.
